Semporna, Sabah – December 26th to 28th, 2023
The Persatuan Rakan Alam Sekitar UiTM Student Chapter (RAS UiTM SC), in collaboration with the Sabah Department of Environment and Tawau through the Oceaners Assemble 2.0 Program, introduced the “Let’s Dispose E-Waste” campaign and brought innovative programs to the community in Semporna. This program aimed at the responsible management of electronic waste (e-waste) and promoted innovation for better environmental preservation.
Amirul bin Aripin, Director of the Sabah Department of Environment (JAS), stated that the ‘Let’s Dispose E-Waste’ campaign received an overwhelming response from various segments of the Semporna community, including residents and tourists, in their efforts to conserve the environment. The campaign involved various engaging activities.
Activities included a mobile campaign going door-to-door around Kampung Labuan Haji, Pulau Bum Bum. Additionally, informative brochures were distributed to local residents and tourists around Pekan Semporna, and an e-waste management session was conducted for 48 students at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pulau Mabul.
Amirul highlighted that the community engagement didn’t stop there. Engaging activities such as USB & Ladder games with an e-waste theme, hands-on production of mosquito repellent lotions, and the distribution of toys, storybooks, religious books, soap, and mosquito repellent lotions crafted and provided by the dedicated RAS UiTM SC members were also conducted.
This marked the second time RAS UiTM SC conducted an e-waste campaign on an island, following their successful campaign on Pulau Perhentian on June 4-5, 2023, where similar initiatives were undertaken to address environmental concerns.
During a discussion with the Village Chiefs of Pulau Mabul, Haji Muhamad Yusuf, and Puan Siti Jumba of Kampung Labuan Haji, they expressed appreciation for the e-waste awareness initiative, emphasizing its importance in raising environmental awareness among the community.
Mansur bin Ureh, Headmaster of SK Pulau Mabul, conveyed gratitude to RAS UiTM SC. He urged the students not to perpetuate negative practices like disposing of waste into the sea, which adversely affects everyone, during the Oceaners Assemble 2.0 program inauguration at SK Pulau Mabul.
This program marked RAS UiTM SC’s eighth successful Jom Lupus E-Waste campaign, making it a primary initiative to assist the Department of Environment in ensuring our environmental sustainability.
