Muhyiddin Urges Anwar to Give Up Finance Minister, Step Down

An Analysis of Muhyiddin Yassin's Call for Anwar to Resign as Finance Minister and Step Down

Former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has suggested that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should resign as the finance minister and advise his daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, to step down from her role as senior adviser. Muhyiddin also said that Anwar’s deputy, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is facing corruption charges, should go on leave until the conclusion of his court cases.

In a Facebook post, Muhyiddin stated that Anwar’s government was not starting off on the right footing due to the breach of good governance practices in appointing Ahmad Zahid as the deputy prime minister. Muhyiddin advised Anwar to focus on his duties as the prime minister, especially during these tough times. He called Nurul Izzah a young and talented leader with great potential and suggested not to let the inappropriate appointment tarnish her political future.

Muhyiddin also criticized Anwar for betraying the spirit of “Reformasi”, the slogan synonymous with PKR’s crusade, within 100 days of being in power. He accused Ahmad Zahid’s appointment as the deputy prime minister as a political transaction and said it was embarrassing for Malaysians if he went abroad and met foreign leaders while his cases were still in court.

On the other hand, Wanita PKR defended Nurul Izzah’s appointment, stating it aligns with the unity government’s goal to build a team of significant figures in nation building. The group trusts Nurul Izzah’s leadership and academic qualifications to bring a positive impact to the country. Anwar confirmed that Nurul Izzah is not receiving any allowances for her role as senior adviser.
