The Indonesian national team suffered a 0-2 defeat against Vietnam in the second leg match of the 2022 AFF Cup semifinals on Monday, January 9, 2023, resulting in their elimination from the tournament. In a post-match press conference, coach Shin Tae-Yong identified a lack of adaptation and concentration as contributing factors to the loss.
According to Shin, the team struggled to adapt to the pitch at the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi, which he described as being in a different condition than the field at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta. He also noted that the Vietnam team was better adapted to the field.
Vietnam scored their first goal just three minutes into the match, with striker Nguyen Tien Linh executing a well-timed kick that caught Indonesian goalkeeper Nadeo Argawinata off guard. Shin attributed this goal to the team’s lack of adaptation to the pitch.
The second goal, scored by Nguyen Tien Linh less than two minutes into the second half, was due to a lack of concentration on the part of the Indonesian team, according to Shin. He pointed out that the team’s concentration had decreased and that they were unable to properly guard their opponent.
With this loss, the Indonesian national team was unable to meet the target set by the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) of winning the 2022 AFF Cup. Vietnam has qualified for the final and will face either Malaysia or Thailand, depending on the outcome of the Thailand vs Malaysia semi-final second leg match held on Tuesday, January 10.
